Abby's Journey:
Little Abernathy was due on Jake's birthday (Thurs, Aug 9th). That day it was obvious we'd be around to celebrate so Jake's whole family and my parents came over for some pizza and s'mores around the fire. I was feeling pretty good – kinda tired because things were pretty busy at work since people decided to put off all the work they needed me to do until right before Abby was due. That night after I got out of the shower I started feeling weird. Not in pain, just weird. I woke up around 4am and could barely walk at first but went and laid on the couch, watched the olympics and fell asleep until 9. In the morning I worked from home and sent a proof of a booklet I'd been working on all summer to the printers. Once it was sent, I went to the dr to get a urine test. I told them I hadn't been feeling great so the dr checked and told Jake and I we could head upstairs. Upstairs? For what? To have the baby! We went home to grab some stuff and got to the hospital around 2. While we were checking in, pressure/contractions started up but they still didn't hurt. The dr broke my water and within a 20 mins contractions got pretty bad. I got an epidural around 3:45 but it moved and they had to redo it a couple times. But, all in all, I was sooo thankful for modern medicine and the miracle of epidurals. When it was effective, Jake and I were laughing and watching the olympics and having a good time. When it wore off... it was not a good time. I'm definitely no hero. Around 7pm, the 3rd epidural was in and secure. I was only at 5cm (about 1cm/hr) so Jake went to get some food since he hadn't eaten all day around 7:30. At 8, the nurse checked me and I was at a 10! I texted Jake who ended up eating his Subway on the toilet to save time to rush back. They had me start pushing around 9 and after 10 mins or so they called the doctor to come. He got there and suited up and I pushed a couple more times and Abby came at 9:36.
Yes, I know, all the women who had to push for hours probably hate me. I really was expecting the worse when I thought about the impending labor for the last 9 months so having it go so smooth was such a blessing. I was able to not feel pain but still move around all I needed and feel when to push and feel her come. And thanks to the epidural problems I also had a real appreciation to the billions of mothers who didn't have the option to get an epidural. I had also prepared myself to see an alien-looking baby and was surprised to see how beautiful she was and hear her loud cries as soon as she came out. They put her on my chest and told me to keep her screaming which went against my mothering instincts because she stopped crying as I bounced her until the nurse shook her around a little more forcefully. She also came out wanting to eat with her mouth wide open and her tongue out so I was able to breast feed her after they cleaned her a little.
It's been an amazing couple weeks with Abby. She already seems to have her own little personality and is such a cute little lady. She's squirted mustard poop on us a few times already. She has grown 3/4" and gained 6oz. She has a little dimples and dark brown hair, although her roots are light brown/blonde. Her eyes look like they're going to be blue, right now they're a dark blue/gray. So far everyone says she looks like Jake and I agree although it's hard to see it sometimes because her chubby cheeks disguise the Nesbit-ness.

Very cute! She is definitely a Nesbit......I am pretty sure that I have seen Jake make each of those faces.
