Ever since I watched "you've got mail" and
saw Kathleen Kelly's headboard...
I always thought it was genius to have one with padding. So, since Jake and I have been married and had no headboard I've been after scheming how to accomplish this without spending any (or hardly any) money. After a trip to the DI, JoAnne's fabric, and Lowe's, here's how it went.
I got this baby at the DI for $10. (I was actually a little disappointed it was that much. When did DI get so pricey?) It was perfect because I could unscrew it to both fit in my car, and put padding/fabric on the middle piece
So, my mom let me have their oldest and junkiest foam mattress camping pad. A new one would've cost over $50 for one that thick!
Then, I glued it to the disassembled board and covered it with batting...
Then, I cut the two fabrics into strips and sewed them together and stapled it over that.
Paint...
and
ShaZAM! A headboard!
I had problems with the paint peeling off when I screwed the padding section back on so I had to take it apart, sand it off and paint a couple sections again. And since I hadn't had any food for awhile I behaved like a 2 year old during this last process. Poor Jake.
But, he's happy now
This past week I've been working on Week of Welcome at Utah State and right after I finished my headboard I realized I used the same colors. I don't know how I feel about that.

Awesome headboard! Great job. Love the Week of Welcome design. Especially the bull emerging from the cloud.
ReplyDeleteKara dahling, simply smashing headboard! This is too cool. I'd love to find an old one to refinish, but we've got a king size bed (for old treetops here) and it's super hard to find a king floating around out there. It's do-able I'm sure, but tricky. Plus, we could use new sheets, but king size ones that are nice are honestly like a hundred bucks! Sheesh. Your week of welcome sign is great! It's so dreamy/friendly -I love that it says "Welcome Home". So will this go on any shirts too? I want one! ( : Love ya kara.
ReplyDeleteLook at your and your domestic goddess skills. Very impressive.

ReplyDeleteHoly moley it looks fantastic! I am totally all about redoing furniture but everything I do looks crapy... maybe one day I will get the hang of it and be good.... Anywho great job!
ReplyDeleteSwweeeeet! Did you score a sewing machine too?
ReplyDeleteyes! Jake's sister Laura had one at her mom's in SLC. It's been there since 2004 so she didn't mind me taking it. I have loads of clothes I want to alter/fix.
